If the 10th of Ashura simply becomes another day of fasting, devoid of reflection on the profound victory of Musa (as) over Phiraun and its relevance to the current situation in Gaza, then we risk reducing Ashura to mere ritualistic observance. Allah has bestowed upon us stories in the Quran to ponder deeply upon, emphasising their timeless relevance beyond mere historical narratives. As Allah declares in the Quran:
“كَذَٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنبَاءِ الْقُرُونِ مَا نُحِيطُ بِهِ عِلْمًا ۚ وَأَتَيْنَاكَ مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكْرًا”
“This is how We relate to you ˹O Prophet˺ some of the stories of the past. And We have certainly granted you a Reminder from Us.” (Quran 20:99)
The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds deep significance for Muslims worldwide, encompassing historical milestones and profound themes of Iman, the struggle between the oppressed and oppressors, and victory. It was on the Day of Ashura when Musa (as) and Bani Israel were saved from Phiraun and his army. The story of Musa (as) is prominently featured in the Quran, offering profound lessons on perseverance, Iman, and struggle amidst trials.
Musa (as) confronted Phiraun, a tyrant who spread corruption and violence, even declaring himself a god. Despite facing arrogance and hostility, Musa (as) remained steadfast, calling upon Phiraun to worship Allah alone. In response, Phiraun pursued Musa (as) and Bani Israel with his army. On the Day of Ashura, at the critical moment when Phiraun’s forces closed in, Musa (as) turned to Allah with a powerful dua:
“إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ”
“Truly my Lord is with me, He will guide me through.” (Quran 26:62)
Allah’s mercy and power were manifest as He (SWT) parted the Red Sea, allowing Musa (as) and Bani Israel to safely cross to the other side. Phiraun and his army, in their pursuit, were ultimately overwhelmed by the sea, drowning in their pursuit of oppression.
In today’s context, the lessons of Ashura resonate powerfully amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza, where Muslims endure protracted conflict and humanitarian crises. The narratives of Prophet Musa (as) struggle against oppression and the subsequent liberation of his people find poignant parallels in contemporary struggles for justice, honour, dignity and security.
Muslims must reflect on Ashura and its multifaceted significance
Iman and Perseverance, Musa (as) unwavering faith in Allah’s guidance and the eventual deliverance of the Israelites serve as a timeless example that resonates deeply with the challenges faced by Muslims in Gaza today. Despite enduring relentless cycles of death, destruction, and displacement, the people of Gaza demonstrate steadfastness and belief comparable to that at the time of Musa (as).
In the face of overwhelming adversity and amidst a complicit international community, they continue to proclaim “حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل” (Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs). This resolute declaration reflects their unwavering trust in Allah’s ultimate justice and mercy, even when abandoned by Muslim rulers. Like Musa (as) confronting Phiraun, the people of Gaza face modern-day injustices with courage and resilience, holding fast to their Iman as a source of strength and hope.
Their endurance through years of blockade, conflict, and hardship embodies the spirit of perseverance and reliance on Allah’s guidance, echoing the historical narrative of Musa (as)struggle against oppression. While international support may waver and political alliances shift, the Iman of Gazans remains steadfast, grounded in the belief that Allah’s promise of relief and justice will prevail. This steadfastness underscores the enduring relevance of Ashura’s lessons in today’s world, reminding Muslims everywhere of the importance of Iman, perseverance, and unity in the face of adversity.
Tyrannical Rule:
Phiraun, claiming divinity and absolute authority, imposed tyrannical rule over the Israelites, subjecting them to oppression, forced labour, and systematic injustice. Israel has maintained a prolonged occupation of Palestinian territories, including Gaza, imposing strict controls over movement, resources, and daily life through military checkpoints, settlements, and a blockade often resulting in a one-sided onslaught.
Military Confrontation:
Phiraun mobilised his military might to pursue Musa (as) and the Israelites when they sought to escape his tyranny and seek refuge. Periodically, Israel has launched genocidal military campaigns and operations in Gaza, which have resulted in significant casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and loss of life.
International Parallels:
The confrontation between Phiraun and Musa (as) illustrates a power dynamic where a ruler uses military force and propaganda to suppress dissent and maintain control over a marginalised population. Phiraun called everyone in the city to launch an offensive against Musa (as) Today the international community’s role in both historical and contemporary contexts highlights the global ramifications of the brutal killing in Gaza, where the international community has turned a blind eye and a deaf ear, contributing to complicity in the ongoing challenges faced by Gaza and its people.
On this Day of Ashura, Muslims are reminded of their duty towards Gaza. As part of this commitment, it is imperative to pledge three fundamental actions:
- Continuously highlight and support the cause of the people in Gaza, who face ongoing adversity and struggle for their basic right to live.
- Steadfastly expose and challenge the double standards and inconsistencies within the international community’s responses to Gaza.
- Earnestly call for the liberation of Palestine, advocating for unity among Muslim ummah under the leadership of a sincere Muslim ruler who governs according to the divine guidance of Allah.
This pledge underscores the essence of Ashura as a catalyst for unity, justice, and proactive efforts towards a world where all people can live in peace and dignity, guided by the principles of the Islamic system.
